Start a Business
For the families we work with, redemption is only the first step to a new life. The next step is to secure a basic level of financial security, so we work with our families to find jobs or create new work.
Most of the people we redeem are illiterate and have only basic skills. Consequently, they start out in low-skilled work such as carting, labouring, agricultural work, vegetable selling, raising chickens, taxi driving, factory work, or market gardening. Often we give people that can read or have basic numeracy a grant to start their own business. Though quite simple operations, these businesses can support a family from the outset and often have the potential to grow over time.
As the Freeslaves project grows, we plan to build multiple businesses that will employ up to 100 people each. We are also planning work training centres, which will extend the skills of our families and help them to attain a greater level of economic empowerment.
